德国化学家R.W.本生为装备海德堡大学化学实验室而发明的用煤气为燃料的加热器具。在本生灯发明前，所用煤气灯的火焰很明亮，但温度不高，是因煤气燃烧不完全造成的。本生将其改进为先让煤气和空气在灯内充分混合，从而使煤气燃烧完全，得到无光高温火焰。火焰分三层：内层为水蒸气、一氧化碳、氢、二氧化碳和氮、氧的混合物，温度约300℃，称为焰心。中层内煤气开始燃烧，但燃烧不完全，火焰呈淡蓝色，温度约500℃，称还原焰。外层煤气燃烧完全，火焰呈淡紫色，温度可达800～900℃，称为氧化焰，此处的温度最高，故加热时利用氧化焰。
